Why are you fundraising, and not just hired as staff by the district?
In short: Budgets.
The district does not currently have enough flexibility to hire additional staff. I estimate it would take a few years to be able to open up space for a position dedicated to youth ministry. The surest way to make this happen is to begin laying tracks, demonstrate the value of investing in this way, and create a positive track record. The district is committed to supporting this ministry and is investing and supporting with what is currently available. We acknowledge that there are many priorities and a limited budget.
Why part time?
I am looking at part time (50%) as a reasonable goal to fundraise in the first 6 weeks. It would be terrific if we were able to raise enough so that I could serve here full time. My actual hours can be adjusted every 6 months.
What else will you do if you are part time with the district?
I would also like to be able to continue to be connected to a youth ministry in a local church, either as staff, or a volunteer. If I am part time with the district, it would be a good opportunity to be in a part time youth role in a local church and am currently pursuing options. I will also be looking into other general work opportunities if possible… though I would like to avoid working fast food again – I paid my dues as a teen.
What are your primary tasks?
Communication, providing Resources, developing the Youth Network, coaching Youth Ministry Leaders and assisting with District Youth Events.
Are you Ordained?
I have been an ordained minister with the Christian and Missionary Alliance since June 2007. I have been registered with the Province of Ontario to perform marriages since 2018 and have a provincially provided clergy number.
How long have you been leading in Youth Ministry?
I have been leading in youth ministry for over 32 years.
First as a student leader in my local RCA church youth group, then with our provincial (Classis) youth executive. During Bible College I served with a CRC church in Toronto, then during Seminary as an Intern at Bayview Glen Church (Thornhill ON), then as Associate Youth Pastor in North Vancouver for several years, and finally Student / Family Ministries Pastor in Newmarket for 13 years.
I have been involved in leading Youth Ministries in several different church structures, including a combined multi-church group, a multi-site church, as well as small, medium and large youth groups.
Who are the Christian & Missionary Alliance?
The C&MA began as two separate Deeper Life and Missions emphasis’ movements around 1890. There is a strong emphasis on Missions as well as the Fourfold Gospel – the four ways Jesus meets our needs: Saviour, Sanctifier, Healer & Coming King. After many years as a Presbyterian minister, Canadian born & UofT (Knox) grad, Rev Albert Benjamin (AB) Simpson founded an independent tabernacle in New York. This movement transformed reluctantly, gradually and by necessity into a denomination, and is now present in 88 countries. You can find more info on the Alliance at cmacan.org/history/ or cmacan.org/about/
What is the Eastern Canadian District?
The Alliance in Canada is made up of 5 districts. The Eastern Canadian District goes from Hwy 27 to the eastern end of Ontario, Lake Ontario to Lake Simcoe, plus the Maritimes.
You can find more info at Eastern District or @ CMA Canada District Map
What will you be doing?
Working with youth leaders and Pastors in Alliance churches across Central and Eastern Ontario & the Maritimes (the Eastern Canadian District of the C&MA) to support, resource and strengthen the discipleship of students and the development of student leaders.
My time will be focused in four areas: i) Content and Resources,
ii) Coaching, Training and Strategic Planning, iii) District Youth Events
& iv) Strengthening the ECD Youth Ministry Network
